OCTOBER: FREE LUNCH FOR ALL STUDENTS

October 1, 2025

We want to provide an update on the State of Michigan’s school budget and how it affects our meal program.

Early this morning, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a continuation budget to keep state government operating. A joint press release from Governor Whitmer, Speaker Matt Hall, and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks indicates that a full budget bill is expected to pass in the coming days, which would make school lunches free for all students during the 2025–2026 school year.

Governor Whitmer stated:

“The Michigan state government will stay open. We’re on the verge of making huge progress to fix our state and local roads, feed our kids at school, cut taxes for seniors and working families, protect access to affordable health care, and keep Michiganders safe in their communities. In the meantime, state government will continue providing uninterrupted services and state employees will work today, getting things done for their fellow Michiganders.”

By the end of October, we expect to have more details about the final budget and will share updates with families. If the budget is not passed at that time, please know that Les Cheneaux Community Schools will cover all lunch expenses through October 31, 2025, ensuring no student goes without meals during this transition.
